Some projects need batteries that cannot be bought off the shelf. If you’re really pushing the boundaries of product design, you may think there’s no-one who can make you a relatively small number of custom rechargeable batteries so that you can make the product you want, rather than what components allow. You need to know about GIGALI…
ipXchange loves chatting with companies that enable engineers to do something a little different in their designs. In this writeup of a private ipXperience with Frank Chen, CEO of GIGALI, we discuss the importance of battery selection when designing a new product and the benefits of GIGALI’s high levels of expertise in making custom battery solutions to suit unusual form factors.
The power of custom rechargeable batteries
Applications like driverless cars and IoT have been a key driving force that has prompted GIGALI to explore markets outside of its native China. GIGALI produces many rechargeable and non-rechargeable (primary) batteries for demanding applications, such as those that require high peak discharge currents or high- or low-temperature operation. The latter is important for enabling sensor nodes to operate for long periods of time in environments where battery performance is typically expected to suffer.
The key differentiator with GIGALI is its ability to provide custom rechargeable battery solutions in a wide range of sizes and shapes, including ultrathin and flexible variants of LiPo pouch technology for smart card and smart ring designs.
The high performance of these devices is ensured by GIGALI’s understanding of the electrical, material/chemical, and mechanical design requirements of battery technology when presented with a customer’s project. GIGALI has recently set up German and American offices in order to provide these high levels of service around the World and minimise lead times.
How GIGALI has helped past customers
During our discussion, Frank highlighted how GIGALI’s quick turnaround has allowed them to solve design issues for large companies like Swatch Group when an alternative battery could not be sourced. After receiving the project requirements, GIGALI’s team managed to figure out a custom solution within 12 hours.
Oura Smart rings are another product that has benefitted from GIGALI’s fast turnaround in determining a solution and putting it into production. Frank claimed that it took around an hour for a decision to be made and a specialised arc-shaped battery to be put into production after being given a tour of the facilities.
The beauty of GIGALI’s low MOQ philosophy
But these are obviously large companies with large production runs, so what is the Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ) for GIGALI’s custom solutions? Frank explained that many medical device manufacturers, for example, will not be looking to create huge production orders for highly specialised products. Nevertheless, they may require extremely customized batteries, and this is where GIGALI truly separates itself from its competitors:
GIGALI can supply custom rechargeable batteries from as small as 1000-5000 pieces because it understands that not every project is worth 1 million units, but it may be much more important than a product designed for mass-market appeal. It is able to do this because it truly understands LiPo technology and has perfected short-run manufacturing cycles.
ipXchange really loves GIGALI’s philosophy when it comes to custom battery design, especially given their expertise, which many companies would use to simply coast on the success of a few big-name partnerships.
