Asahi Kasei Microdevices Currentier Current Sensors For High-Power GaN and SiC Designs

Asahi Kasei Microdevices’ (AKM’s) “Currentier” – “Current + Frontier” – current sensors provide leading-edge in-line current sensing/monitoring for high-power applications such as AC servo motors, industrial and photovoltaic inverters, and charging stations. An ultra-fast response time makes them an ideal solution in next-generation Gallium Nitride (GaN) and Silicon Carbide (SiC) designs.

Currentier devices feature an inbuilt high-sensitivity Hall element that allows for DC and AC current sensing from 5 A to 180 A (continuous) across the product range. The highly integrated, high isolation package boasts a low primary conductor resistance of 0.27 mΩ that is 3x smaller than competing coreless current sensors, resulting in dramatically reduced heat generation, and allowing for significant space savings within a system, thanks to the simplified thermal design; 8-mm creepage/clearance distance (compliant with UL61800-5-1) and 1-µs overcurrent response time ensures the highest levels of safety in your design.

While most Currentier devices have an analogue output, ipXchange interviewed AKM at PCIM Europe 2023 about their new products, which feature delta-sigma digital output, with an integrated ADC (Analogue-to-Digital Converter) that allows for even greater space saving in your design – almost all the required infrastructure for typical analogue current sensors is contained within the chip.

If you are interested in evaluating this technology for use in a commercial design, fill out the form below, and ipXchange will facilitate conversation with AKM for more information about their latest devices. For now, the specifications of one of AKM’s leading analogue-output devices can be found below:

  • Maximum primary current: 100 Arms
  • Accuracy: 0.5% full scale
  • Primary conductor resistance: 0.27 mΩ typ.
  • Response time: 0.5 μs typ.
  • Output options: Differential with VREF pin, ratiometric
  • Size: 12.7 × 10.9 × 2.25 mm
  • Internal stray magnetic field reduction function
  • Compliant with safety standard of UL61800-5-1 (Clearance/creepage distance ≥ 8.0 mm)
  • Certified with safety standards of UL-1577 and IEC/UL 62368-1
  • Isolation voltage: 4.2 kVAC

The datasheet for this CZ375-series product can be found here.

AKM also offers ultra-fast-response (4 MHz) current sensing technology that can be integrated into your design. If this, or any other Currentier device is of interest to you, the same form (below) can be used to apply for samples, evaluation boards, and more information.
