Transphorm 4 kW Analogue Control Bridgeless Totem-Pole PFC GaN Evaluation Platform

Transphorm’s 4 kW analogue-control bridgeless totem-pole power factor correction (PFC) evaluation platform provides designers with an easy-to-use configuration to test the performance and efficiency of Transphorm’s SuperGaN FETs for single-phase AC-DC conversion in power supplies for datacentre and industrial applications.

This design features a switching frequency of 65 kHz and a traditional analogue control architecture that removes the requirement for firmware development. A digitally controlled version of this platform is also available, and both serve as a useful tool for developers looking to use higher-voltage GaN. If preferred, please specify this option when filling in the application form below.

This platform uses Texas Instruments’ UCC28180 analogue controller in conjunction with Transphorm’s TP65H035G4WS 650 V 35 mΩ SuperGaN FETs. The SuperGaN FETs are used in the circuit’s fast-switching leg, and low-resistance silicon MOSFETs are used in the slow-switching leg.

The TP65H035G4WS devices are available in an industry-standard 3-lead TO-247 package (with source tab) for familiar PCB layout and high thermal efficiency. A key differentiator is that Transphorm’s solution is an innovative fusion of state-of-the-art GaN HEMT technology and low-voltage silicon MOSFET technology, which creates a GaN solution with superior reliability over competitor alternatives. The main performance benefits of Transphorm’s GaN is improved efficiency over silicon due to the reduced gate charge, crossover loss, and reverse recovery charge. This is illustrated in the key specifications of the device:

-> VDSS: 650 V
-> VDSS(TR): 800 V
-> RDS(On)eff max.: 41 mΩ
-> QRR typ.: 150 nC
-> QG typ.: 22 nC

Transphorm’s solution can be driven using commonly used gate drivers and allows for increased power density, increased efficiency in both hard- and soft-switched circuits, reduced system size and weight, and lower overall system cost in applications including data communications, industrial devices, PV inverters, and servo motor controllers.

The full datasheet for the TP65H035G4WS device can be found here, and a user guide for the evaluation platform can be found here.
