The Weightless™ End Device Module from Ubiik is an easy-to-use approach to bidirectional wireless communication. Designed for use in IoT devices, it complies with the open, license-free Weightless™ protocol specifications and, with a full Weightless™ protocol stack, including the AT command interface, this connectivity solution offers rapid time to market. The communication range is >3 km for line-of-sight environments, corresponding to a real-world >1 km range in urban environments. Ubiik’s End Device Module operates on the following frequency bands: 450-507 MHz, 840-870 MHz, and 902-928 MHz.

Ideal for M2M, IoT, and smart building applications, the device boasts a compact form factor (28 mm by 13 mm), single operating voltage (1.2 V to 3.6 V) with low power consumption, and a programmable data rate from 625 bps to 100 kbps. The AT command interface and device firmware upgrades are performed over UART, and the device is driven by an ARM® Cortex®-M3 @40MHz, with 256 kB Flash memory and 32 kB RAM.

Weightless™ is a proven, high-performance LPWAN connectivity technology for the Internet of Things (IoT) and offers bidirectional communication, long range, secure and reliable communications, scalability, robust coding, ultra-low power consumption, and open standard usability, ensuring interoperability between manufacturers.

To test this End Device Module, Ubiik offers an evaluation board (65 mm by 55 mm) which allows uses to quickly program settings over USB, add sensors, and create product prototypes. It can be powered over USB or using batteries; the recommended voltage when using batteries is 1.8 V to 5.5 V, so a pair of AAs should work fine though a method of connecting them must be added by the user. The transmit power of this module is adjustable up to 13 dBm, and there is an optional PA version with output power up to 26 dBm. For even more fun, Ubiik also does a starter kit that includes their Weightless™ Indoor Base Station (at 868 MHz or 915 MHz) with antenna and AC adaptor, 2 evaluation boards, 2 EVB antennae, 2 Micro USB cables, and a 60-day free-access trial of Ubiik Cloud.
