Digi ConnectCore 8M Mini SoM And Development Kit

Digi’s ConnectCore 8M Mini SoM (System-on-Module) is based on NXP’s i.MX 8M Mini processor and is available in Digi’s highly reliable 40 x 45 x 3.5-mm SMTplus castellated form factor for direct soldering into your design. It is certified for operation in temperatures between -40°C and 85°C and is resilient to industrial levels of shock and vibration, with 3 years warranty.

The ConnectCore 8M Mini SoM features 4x Cortex-A53 application cores running at 1.6 GHz and a 400-MHz Cortex-M4 real-time core. Additionally, Digi’s Microcontroller Assist independent Cortex-M0+ subsystem enables ultra-low-power operation down to <3 µA current draw. The main processing architectures are supported by up to 8 GB eMMC and up to 2 GB of LPDDR4 memory.

As a device geared towards industrial, off-vehicle automotive, and medical IoT applications, Digi’s ConnectCore 8M Mini SoM supports 10/100/1000M ethernet and AVB (Audio Video Bridging) wired communications and dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac and Bluetooth 5 wireless connectivity.

To support visually pleasing user interfaces, this module features extensive hardware graphics architectures, 3D and 2D graphics accelerators, an HD display controller, 4-lane MIPI display and camera interfaces, and video processing units for encode and decode operations.

In addition to these internal capabilities, the ConnectCore 8M Mini boasts the following interfaces for connecting to external devices:

  • 1x PCIe 2.0
  • 2x USB 2.0
  • 3x Ultra Secure Digital Host Controllers (USDHC)
  • 5x UART
  • 4x I2C
  • 3x SPI
  • 1x Quad SPI
  • 10x PWM channels
  • 1x 16-bit ADC with up to 20 channels
  • 5x Synchronous audio interfaces supporting I2S, AC97, TDM, codec/DSP and DSD
  • 1x S/PDIF input and output
  • 8-channel PDM input
  • Up to 112 GPIOs

The module contains the hardware and software to support power management for low-power designs, and connectivity can be expanded via Digi’s XBee wireless modules. Digi’s TrustFence and the inbuilt hardware secure element ensure your device remains safe from external attack.

In addition to the ConnectCore hardware platform, Digi also offers its ConnectCore Cloud services for device monitoring and management, including over-the-air updates, and a fully embedded Yocto Linux distribution or Android OS.

Digi’s ConnectCore 8M Mini SoM can be easily evaluated using the carrier board pictured, which features breakout connectors and pin headers so that you can easily connect peripherals during development.
