120+ sensors, 15 radio technologies, and lowest power consumption: The ultimate IoT dev board?

In this week’s ipXperience, Guy chats with Libelium’s Javier Solobera about Waspmote, a jaw-dropping solution for easy, fast development of IoT sensor products. With so many options to choose from, this dev board needs its own catalogue! 

Libelium’s Waspmote is an Arduino-based platform that features a modular design. The heart of the system is a 73.5 x 51 x 13 mm base board that uses an ATmega1281 MCU with several power-saving modes, including Deep Sleep at 33 µA and Hibernate at 7 µA current consumptions. This and digital switching to control power supply to peripherals enables long battery life and/or operation using a solar panel. 

Designers can then choose from several application-focussed sensor boards that use a selection of over 120 third-party sensors, as well as connectivity boards for 15 wireless protocols and a handful of industrial wired protocols. The best part about Waspmote is that Libelium has done all the basic interfacing, software, and firmware development already, so it’s just a case of choosing the options you want, and you’re ready to go. You can even get a custom board for your choice of sensors! 

In addition to this vast candy store of hardware options, Waspmote supports Over-The-Air (OTA) updates, and several encryption libraries are provided to secure your IoT against external threats. While other manufacturers offer similar solutions, Libelium is confident that they provide the most flexible option with the widest range of possible applications for their IoT development platform.
