Shields are synonymous with the Arduino ecosystem. But you may be wondering where they are for the PRO line of products. They may look a little different, but the Portenta Shields still provide an easy way to add great functionality to your industrial-grade designs!
At Hardware Pioneers Max 2024, ipXchange caught up with our good friends at Arduino to discover even more of their industrial-grade product portfolio. We’ve talked a lot about the Portenta series – the flagships of the Arduino PRO line of products – as well as some of the carrier boards that they can be connected to. But, as Sebastian explains, there are also Portenta Shields for instantly adding more than a little extra to your design:
The Portenta Vision Shields
Arduino offers Ethernet and LoRaWAN Portenta Vision Shields to add connected image perception to your design. Each board features an ultra-low-power 324 x 324-pixel camera for always-on image data capture. You can then use the powerful processing capabilities of the host Portenta to perform AI image recognition, for example. The added connectivity enables you to seamlessly report this data back to the cloud.
Sebastian has already seen these Portenta Vision Shields used in automation environments for defect detection on assembly lines.
The Portenta Vision Shields are interfaced with the Portenta host boards using the signature high-density connectors of the Portenta series. This makes for a powerful yet compact industrial IoT vision solution with a fraction of the typical time-to-market.
The Portenta Cat. M1/NB IoT GNSS Shield
The second shield does exactly what it says on the tin: it adds cellular IoT and GNSS positioning to your design. This is great for moving IoT deployments such as in smart agriculture settings, or other low-power GNSS designs that require more processing power than your average asset tracker.
Though Sebastian hasn’t tested it himself, these Portenta Shields are stackable in the same way as traditional Arduino hardware, so learn more about the complete industrial-grade Arduino ecosystem by following the link to the board page below. There, you can apply to evaluate the technology for use in a commercial project, and ipXchange will get you connected with Arduino for the best pricing and service. We look forward to seeing what you can dream up.
Keep designing!
