In the Metalenz Polar ID

Metalenz Polar ID is the first consumer-grade facial authentication system capable of sensing the full polarization state of light to deliver deepfake‑proof face ID. Using proprietary flat metasurface optics and polarization imaging, it captures both the 2D intensity image and the polarization signature of human skin in a single near-infrared snapshot.

Why It Stands Out

Most smartphones rely on fingerprint sensors or basic selfie cameras for face unlock—methods that can be spoofed easily with photos or masks. Metalenz’s technology adds a second layer of security: if the polarization signature doesn’t match live human tissue (skin, sweat, subdermal layers), access is denied. This ensures robust authentication even when users wear masks or sunglasses, or when attackers attempt high-quality 3D spoofing masks  .

Compact, Low-Cost, and Scalable

Polar ID replaces complex structured-light systems—like Apple’s Face ID module—with a compact metasurface optic and an illumination source. It eliminates bulky modules and cuts cost by up to 50% while occupying less PCB space. Built in standard semiconductor fabs alongside image sensors, it costs around $5 in small volume—versus roughly $14 for structured-light modules  .

High-Resolution + All-Condition Reliability

With more than 10× the resolution of structured-light face authentication (over 400,000 pixels), Polar ID reliably works across low light, daylight, and backlit conditions. Its near-infrared operation at 940 nm ensures accurate recognition even in challenging lighting environments  .

Technology Overview: PolarEyes Meets AI

Polar ID is built on Metalenz’s PolarEyes polarization imaging platform: a flat metasurface that splits incoming light into multiple polarization channels, preserving polarization data on a low-profile package. When paired with a compatible sensor like Samsung’s ISOCELL Vizion 931 and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon imaging stack, the system delivers secure authentication through an advanced, ML-backed pipeline—all within a standard camera footprint  .

Proven Scale and Integration

Metalenz has already shipped its metasurface lenses in over 45 million devices and is in active trials with major OEMs. In early 2024, the company began customer integration using Samsung’s ISOCELL Vizion 931 and Qualcomm’s reference platforms, targeting mass-market adoption of Metalenz Polar ID modules in Android smartphones by early 2026  .

Target Markets

  • Smartphones & AR/VR: Secure face unlock without bulky hardware
  • Consumer electronics: Compact biometric gateways for tablets and wearables
  • Access control & payments: Mask-resistant authentication in kiosks, robotics, and IoT
  • Automotive and industrial safety: Anti-spoofing security in vehicles and smart robots

With machine learning models trained on polarization-rich data, Metalenz is unlocking broader material classification, environmental sensing, and health signals—blurring the line between biometric security and sensor-enabled insight
