Low-power motion tracking with AI-capable sensors

In the first of two interviews with Bosch Sensortec at CES 2024, Guy chats with Sebastien about a novel technology platform that enables high-performance full-body motion tracking using up to eight sensor nodes placed on the body.

These wirelessly connected sensor nodes feature Bosch’s BHI380 6-axis smart IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit), BMP581 barometric pressure sensor, and BMM350 magnetometer to determine their orientation and relative position in real time for mapping onto virtual avatars, as shown on the screen.

Key application areas include fitness, activity tracking, and rehabilitation, but in the true style of CES, Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), and gaming are key markets that could make great use of this technology.

Bosch has also created an SDK and software toolchain that allows users to train these sensors using AI and upload these models directly to the sensors themselves. By using this Bosch ecosystem, designers also benefit from a unified development environment and reduced power consumption than when building similar devices using chips from multiple vendors.

As Sebastian demonstrates, the gesture recognition capabilities of this setup are vast. Learn more about this exciting motion tracking platform by following the link to the board page below, where you can apply to evaluate this technology for use in a commercial project.

Keep designing!
