xMEMS Solid-State MEMS Microspeakers & Driver ICs

xMEMS’ devices present a truly disruptive solution that offers the World’s first solid-state MEMS microspeakers with the full audio bandwidth of 20 Hz to 20 kHz, and a flat frequency response across this spectrum. This presents a high-efficiency, more compact, uniform solution to traditional magnetic voice coil speaker technology.

xMEMS solution has several key advantages over voice coils:

  • 150x faster response – this allows for previously unseen levels of audio clarity and presence as the physical limits of the speaker do not impede the true reproduction of the waveform.
  • 95x more rigid membrane – the sound is consistent across all volumes as the physical limits of paper or plastic membrane technology do not colour the sound, i.e., there are no in-band resonances.
  • Uniformity of manufacturing – the MEMS fabrication process enables far less variability in devices. This means that less testing and calibration is required by the manufacturer and that phase control can be tuned to +/-1° consistency for improved spatial audio.
  • Added robustness – MEMS technology is far less susceptible to damage through shock or vibration; xMEMS speakers are rated at up to 10,000 g.
  • Reduced power consumption – driving capacitive MEMS requires far less current than electromagnetic coils.

These advantages result in better speech-in-noise performance for applications such as hearing aids or noise cancellation thanks to the faster and fuller response across the entire audible range. MEMS technology also enables better Sound Pressure Level (SPL) per unit volume while retaining a Total Harmonic Distortion (TDH) of only 0.5% (94 dB @ 1 kHz).

xMEMS microspeakers are available in various models with water- and dust-proof IP58-rated packages and top- or side-firing output. This compactness and flexibility leaves more space for larger critical components like batteries in your design. As an example, the Montara full-range speaker (pictured) measures in at 6.05 x 8.4 x 1.15 mm, with the companion Aptos amplifier IC at 1.92 x 1.92 x 0.6 mm (WLCSP).
