Need a compact IoT module with some serious AI processing capabilities at the edge? Supermicro gives you that with a fanless design for far less maintenance.
In another Memorysolution partner video from Embedded World 2024, ipXchange chats with Joshua from Supermicro and Dominik from DENKweit, a software company that is putting Supermicro’s hardware to use with a practical AI demonstration. Funnily enough, this hardware uses the Hailo-8 AI accelerator module we discussed in our previous Memorysolution partner video, so go check that out for more information!
First thing’s first, Dominik explains the demo, which uses a camera to observe various objects and differentiates between them using the fast, low-power Hailo-8 AI accelerator card inside Supermicro’s E100-12T-H fanless IoT server module. A typical application for this setup would be a pick-and-place machine on an automated assembly line.
Dominik commends the Hailo-8 for enabling the 60-ms object identification time and total power consumption of around 5 W in this complete software + hardware setup. This capability is something that is not yet widespread in the embedded computing space, so it’s definitely worth a look.
Joshua then explains how the Intel Core i7 processor is the main component in Supermicro’s lightweight, 3.5-inch-SBC-type module, but it is the addition of the Hailo M.2 card that enables such high-level inferencing in such a compact setup. He also expands on the possibilities for this technology in smart city applications like people counting and facial recognition.
The key benefit of Supermicro’s Hailo-integrated IoT server modules is that all AI inferencing can be done on the device. This means that video feeds are not required to be sent to the cloud for analysis, so raw data privacy is ensured.
Additionally, the compact, fanless design makes Supermicro’s IoT module great for industrial environments as it can be easily and securely installed with very little maintenance requirements – No fan means dust cannot get into the system and short out the electronics.

We’ve got another demo coming from the Supermicro booth, so stay tuned for more edge-AI innovation.
Keep designing!
