The perfect EV charging station SoM? Digi has it!

A fast car is one thing, but a fast time to market is even better! Yes, Digi’s ConnectCore SoMs and everything around them might be the best way to start an EV charger project…

In another interview with the legendary Bob from Digi – this time at Embedded World 2024 – ipXchange discovers a new ConnectCore SoM (System-on-Module) that is great for EV charger applications.

In this working prototype of an EV charging station, Digi’s ConnectCore 8M Mini SoM controls the networking, interfacing, and runs the protocols required for the application. This is working in conjunction with power controller boards for some off-the-shelf contactors.

As Bob explains, EV chargers need to do a lot more than simply charge a vehicle. They require:

  • Processing power for displays and running protocols
  • Connectivity using various wireless standards depending on the installation
  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the edge to recognise number plates, for example
  • Highest levels of security so that consumer data and privacy remain safe
  • Additional sensors for unit health monitoring and predictive maintenance, especially in the case of accidents and vandalism

Digi makes this all possible in one single development kit that can be also used for prototyping industrial products, medical devices, and other high-performance IoT installations.

The ConnectCore 8M Mini SoM is at the heart of this, with 4x Cortex-A53 cores running at 1.6 GHz, a Cortex-M4 core running at up to 400 MHz for low-power processing, ethernet, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, and so much more.

Digi supports designs using this certified module for over 10 years (with a 3-year warranty), so designers can be confident that these SoMs are built to last.

On top of this extensive hardware platform, Digi also offers a ready-to-go Linux environment for its SoMs, with support and drivers for everything you need to build your EV charging application, for example. This includes the security, and Digi also provides customers with a cloud platform so that they can monitor these builds, provide over-the-air updates, and keep the system safe from new security threats.

ipXchange previously encountered the ConnectCore platform at Hardware Pioneers Max 2023, but with new SoMs comes new board pages, so learn more by following the link to the board page below, and apply to evaluate Digi’s ConnectCore 8M Mini SoM today.

Keep designing!
