CUI’s VX78-1000R series of compact, encapsulated, non-isolated DC-DC convertors offer a highly efficient alternative to conventional linear regulators (LDOs). These devices exhibit up to 96% typical efficiency and do not require use of a heatsink; the operating temperature is specified at -40 to +85°C. This reduces the required board space for implementing a typical LDO, making CUI’s solution a great fit for energy-efficient, compact end products across many applications.
The VX78-1000R devices come in a 11.5 x 9 x 17.5 mm package that is pin-compatible with TO-220-package LM78XX and LM79XX model regulators. The trade-off with the clean but inefficient performance of LDOs comes in the form of a maximum ripple and noise at 75 mVpp.
This series features a 36 V maximum input voltage (no-load current as low as 0.2 mA) with a maximum output of 1 A at 3-15 V. Some devices in the series are also suitable for negative output applications, but all come with short-circuit protection on the output and 60950 safety standard qualification.
