Performance Motion Devices ION/CME N-Series Digital Motor Drives

Performance Motion Devices’ ION®/CME N-series Digital Drives are rugged, compact, PCB-mountable modules for high-performance motion control. These easy-to-use, plug-and-play devices come in 36 variants catering to four motor types (step motor, brushless DC, DC brush, multi-motor), three host interfaces (serial, CAN/SPI, ethernet), and three power levels (low (75 W), medium (350 W), high (1000 W)), with up to 20 A continuous output. The compact size of these devices – 37.6 x 37.6 x 16.8 mm – makes them a great fit in medical, scientific, semiconductor, and other automation applications.

The ION/CME N Series can be powered by a 12-56 V single power source and provide high power density with 20, 40, 80 and 120 kHz PWM frequency and 20 kHz servo loop rate. The devices are fully programmable and can perform a variety of motion-control functions, including profile generation, servo compensation, stall detection, field-oriented control, and digital torque control. Performance Motion Devices provides users with a library of C-language motion commands for faster development and shorter time-to-market. The Magellan Motion Control IC at the heart of the device guarantees software compatibility with all other Performance Motion Devices products, so developers can switch between modules and ICs without having to relearn the programming architecture.

Users can also develop their own applications within the drive for a fully integrated motion solution that does not require additional control components. The module is capable of user code execution at up to 418 MIPS, and multi-tasking with up to 16 tasks.

An internal block diagram for the ION/CME N-Series drive is shown below:

In addition to a high-resolution ±10 V 16-bit ADC input, 8 GPIOs, 256 kB of programmable user code space, and 256 kB user application RAM space, integrated safety features include over current, over temperature, over/under voltage, i2T current foldback, brake signal, and shunt control.

Performance Motion Devices produces several evaluation kits for their product range, which includes modules, boards, and ICs that all feature the same programming architecture. The developer kit for the ION/CME N-series Digital Drives is recommended as a first point of call due to its ease of use and full range of functions. Once you have developed a solution using this device, Performance Motion Devices can facilitate migration to an IC-based solution if required in your application.

This kit includes the ION/CME N-Series integrated hardware and software package, Performance Motion Device’s Pro-Motion® Software and SDK with C-Motion®, manuals, and a cabling and prototyping connector set.

If you’ve got a commercial application, and you want to put Performance Motion Devices’ modules to the test, fill in the form below to apply for a sample. Feel free to also indicate whether you would rather a board/IC evaluation platform.
